Configuration Management Database

What is a CMDB and why do you need one?

Recommendations in the government's ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library) have been adopted as best practice in the provision of IT service support across the world. Configuration Management Databases are central to this - in fact, the CMDB should be pervasive throughout your entire organisation. Use it to track millions of discrete components, configuration items and relationships, spanning many architectural layers from infrastructure to business processes.

A good CMDB should:

Be able to hold any information about any item

Accept that some items are versionable and treat versions as first-class items, not as an afterthought

Allow relationships between different items

Use rules to ensure that only valid relationships are created

Be able to aggregate data from silos
Enable the user to quickly find relevant information

For long-term satisfaction the CMDB should be a properly designed product at the heart of your information management, not a bolt-on to your help desk.

Cimera: More than just a CMDB

Cimera is a workflow-enabled CMDB. We built the best CMDB we could and then we added a workflow layer. Finally, we added extensibility with an API and plug-in architecture.

Not only does Cimera meet the CMDB requirements, but the workflow component also allows processes to be managed. Want to implement problem management or error control? Or create a requesting system for test environment deployments? With Cimera you can. And the plug-in architecture means that when someone authorises the deployment you can make it happen automatically.

Cimera supports file attachments. So for a software release the actual software can be stored in Cimera which means that Cimera can now also be your DSL.
